Trio for violin, cello and piano (2019)

Instrumentation:

  • violin — cello — piano

Duration: 22:00

First Performance:

Dedication: “for my friend, Olivia”

Program Note:

  • While not necessarily programmatic, the piece does evoke scenes and dramatic narratives. The first movement, Presto agitato, pits the instruments against each other in a frenzied presto agitato. It has two ideas, the first is an angular diminished motif that opens the piece, and the second is a singing legato melody that suddenly emerges from the chaos. The second movement, Lento, distratto, paints two portraits of passionate beauty and disillusioned nostalgia. Allegro assai is an exuberant scherzo that has the violin and cello pluck throughout. All three instruments are also instructed to play secco, meaning "dry". The final movement, Deliberato - presto, is cast in a loose sonata form. All of its material is derived from the previous movements and brings the trio to a satisfying but almost flippant end.
