Program Note:
String Quartet No. 1 was completed in the summer of 2018 while attending the Atlantic Music Festival in Waterville, Maine.
The first movement, Date Night, is about the age-old duty of asking somebody out on a date and subsequently preparing for it. It simultaneously seeks to tell a visual story as well as portray emotions one might feel. Antoinette depicts the delicate feminine traits and tremendously devastating story of the character Antoinette in Romain Roland's novel Jean-Christophe. The final movement, Overload, gets its name from the fact that the performers are demanded to play without rest through the four-minute romp. It brings back material from the first and second movements providing thematic closure and unity to the piece.
